Comber travelled to the Grove on Saturday to take on Upper Ardoyne in thel eague competition. Comber got off to a very bright start and from the kick off were playing some great football. It didn’t take long for Comber to take the lead, James Miller Hogg got himself into a good position to cross following a strong run and his lofted pass was met by Scott McKeag who finished well with his head. Comber were putting Upper Ardoyne under quite a lot of pressure now with Alex and James working very hard up front. As Alex Robinson made a run towards goal beating a couple of players he was then brought down on the edge of the box awarding Comber a good chance with a free kick. Callum McCloskey stepped up and made no mistake, driving the ball over the wall and into the roof of the net leaving the keeper no chance of saving.
At 2 – 0 Upper Ardoyne did start to get back into the game thoughand were starting to cause a few problems up the other end for the Comber backline. Matty Davidson saved well on a couple of occasions rushing out to the feet of the Upper Ardoyne number 10 and collecting the ball. Billy Davidson also made some saving tackles atcentre back to deny a goal at this stage. Comber netted a 3rd,Callum McCloskey getting his second of the game with a long range attempt which lacked power but as the ball skidded of the wet surface it was enough to foolthe keeper and find the net.
Just before the half time whistle Comber seemed to have taken the foot off the pedal slightlty allowing the Upper Ardoyne forward a free shot on goaf rom the edge of the box which he drilled into the bottom corner well.
A good display from Comber in the first half finishing the first half with a deserved 2 goal lead.
HALF TIME COMBER 3 UPPER ARDOYNE1
At 3 -1 the game was far from overand following their late goal in the first period Upper Ardoyne looked eager toget back in the game with another goal. They had several chances in the opening minutes and again Matty Davidson had to rush from his line a few times to stop the danger. Upper Ardoyne won a corner following another good save from Matty but Comber failed to pick up an Ardoyne player on the edge ofthe box and as the ball reached him he was allowed time to drive the ball in towards the penalty spot and his team mate slotted the ball into the Comber net.
With still 15 minutes leftto play Comber had to tighten up at the back and were starting to get forwardmore now them selves. Alex Robinson had a shot which just went wide and right at the death Callum struck the bar with another well taken free kick. The game finished 3 – 2 Comber. A good result and another 3 points on the board with an overall good performance from the team.
Billy Davidson was awarded Man Of The Match following a solid display at Centre back.
