Having been in NIBFA action on Saturday Comber travelled to Loughside to fulfil the league fixture they missed on Saturday against Chimney Corner. Conditions were miserable leading up to kick off with heavy rain and strong winds. The boys were told before kick off to get plenty of shots in even from long range as any keeper would find it tough to control the ball in the wet conditions. The boys took this on board and had the first of the chances. Aaron Milligan had a shot well saved in the opening minutes and Oliver Wilson came close a couple of times after working hard down the right wing. Chimney Corner had a few chances themselves with their number 10 using his speed to try and get his side in front. But Combers back line defended well with Billy Davidson and Matthew Foster closing play down quickly.
Comber tested the Chimney Corner keeper again from just outside the box and he done well to palm the ball round the post for a corner kick. Callum McCloskey swung it in with his left and for the second game in a row Matthew Foster was there to smack the ball into the net to score the opening goal. 1 – 0. Jamie Cree got Combers second shortly after, pouncing on a lose ball in the box following a set piece. With time closing out in the first period Chimney Corner pulled a goal back. Comber’s midfield failed to track back as Chimney Corner surged forward and a midfielder was allowed plenty of time to tee up a shot from the edge of the box after the quick number 10 squared the ball to him. 2 -1. Oliver Wilson was causing problems down the right wing and he played a big part in securing Combers 3rd goal of the game just before half time. After making a good run to break free from the defence Oliver hit a low shot which beat the keeper but the ball smacked back off the post, luckily though Jamie Cree was in the right place at the right time again to stab the ball over the line for 3 – 1.
HALF TIME COMBER 3 CHIMNEY CORNER 1
The boys had played very well in the first half and saw a lot of possession but the midfield were reminded of their defensive responsibilities and reminded to track back when their opponents were attacking. The boys seemed to take this on board and were now starting to win possession back quickly before a threat to goal was created. Comber created loads of chances throughout the half but the Chimney Corner goalkeeper was having a great game. Even in the wet conditions the keeper kept managing to get a touch on the ball and steer it to safety. Comber’s backline were coping better now with the Chimney Corner forwards and were setting up good pieces of play with both Thomas Gibson and Cameron Foster linking up with the wide players very well. Aaron Milligan who was showing good skill and speed to get forward with the ball saw another good shot from inside the box pushed passed the post late on by the impressive keeper. But Comber kept piling on the pressure and eventually beat the keeper again to bring the score to 4 – 1. Robbie Johnston picked the ball up on the edge of the area, beat a defender and delivered a high shot, the keeper this time got a touch but wasn’t enough to keep the ball out of the net.
Final Score 4 – 1 Comber and the sides impressive form continues. Man of the Match for Comber was Robbie Johnston who worked extremely hard in Combers midfield and whose distribution of the ball throughout the game was excellent.
Well done also to Matthew Foster who was awarded the Player of The Month award (November) after the game. Thanks to all those who weren’t put off by the miserable weather and came out to support the team.
