Youth League
Carnlough
2- 3 Comber Rec
Beltoy
22 September 2006
The Rec lads made the trip to Beltoy for a
league match against Carnlough. Comber started
brightly and within the opening minute Justin
Childs had a goal bound header cleared off the
line. Comber continued to press hard for the
opening goal, with practically the first 35
minutes played in the Carnlough half. Just like
last week's match, Comber were finding it difficult
to convert possession into goals. That would
change early in the second-half when after good
work on the right wing by Stuart Hanna the ball
was deflected into the Carnlough goal. Within
minutes Carnlough were level; with Comber defenders
all claiming the ball had crossed the by-line,
it was pulled back and hammered home. Six minutes
later and Comber regained the lead, Stuart Hanna
scoring from close range. A second Carnlough
goal produced more controversy, a long range
effort rebounding off the crossbar, the referee
judging it to have crossed the line.
The
Rec lads pressed hard for the winner and
with time running out it was Ryan "Doddsy"
Irwin who was on hand to nod in after
a shot from Matthew Crooks had been blocked
on the line. In injury time it looked
like the Rec had bagged another goal when
Stuart Hanna fired home from a tight angle.
However, the ball somehow slipped under
the netting leaving the referee no option
other than to award a goal kick to Carnlough.
