Comber lost the toss of the coin and I guess this was a bad omen for the result of the game. The away side had the worst possible start when a backpass was miskicked by Rosbothan due to a bobble and then was failed to be cleared by two Comber defenders. This led to the Whitehead striker scoring from a tight angle. This was totally against the run of play.

 

Comber played well throughout the rest of the half with both Wilson and Clifford having chances to equalise. In fact the pace of Wilson was causing the Whitehead defence, no end of problems. The half ended with Comber one nil down, but still confident of getting something out of the game.

 

Changes were made early in the second half and soon after Comber were awarded a penalty when Wilson was upended by the Eagles keeper after a great run and Clifford scored the spotkick. After that everyone expected a Comber winner but missed chances by Milligan and Wilson kept the scores level. Clifford had the ball in the net again but the referee judged him to be offside. A very harsh call! With only a few minutes left Whitehead were awarded a free kick and the Whitehead midfield scored (wind assisted) a very fortunate winner. Some thought it was a cross!

 

All in all a fairly decent preformance by a new squad of Comber players, however in my opinion the challenges of some need to be more committed. It is not enough at times to just run alongside an opposing player and not put a tackle in! A large squad should sort out this problem and along with better finishing, the season ahead should be successful enough. I hope!!
