Appex

The Rec players travelled the short distance to billy neill pitches on a cold ,damp ,windy morning for a home match against last seasons league winners Appex ,the Rec have always had close matches in the past however the Rec have failed to beat today’s opponents in any of there previous meetings .

Coach Phil Johnston was pleased to welcome back Owen John Gill following his recent ankle injury and with captain Matty Gibson’s sore toes now feeling much better coach Phil had a fully fit squad to choose from , the only player missing was mighty Zach Quinn due to another commitment.

The Rec players certainly seemed to be up for this morning’s match and following a collective group huddle the referee got the match underway .

The game flowed from end to end with the Rec players coping with the windy conditions much better than there opponents.

The early stages of the match seen the Rec dominating the ball with full back Owen John Gill proving to be a real hand full with his surging runs down the wing .

The Appex players where certainly going in hard with the tackles and it was only going to be a matter of time before the ref started handing out cards .

Jonny the enforcer Jackson was winning the ball in midfield and playing balls through to sadayu who was finding it difficult up against the Appex defence .

10 mins in the ref produces the 1st booking of the match to appex’s no 12 for persistent back chat ,play continues with Adam bestie Martin and his fast feet getting through the Appex defence ,poor forward play see’s the Rec players fail to convert any of the chances . Appex play a long ball in from the left keeper Tom Lappin rises up to clutch the ball out of the air but the referee judges that he is outside his area and awards a free kick in a dangerous position , from the resulting free kick it bounces of the top of the crossbar and out for a goal kick .

35 minutes in and the Rec make there 1st change with sadayu making way for Cameron Haslam and within seconds it pays off Adam bestie Martin plays the ball through and Cameron with virtually his 1st touch puts the ball in the back of the net an inspired substitution by the Rec’s coaching team .

Play continues and that goal has the Rec players dominating the ball with midfield maestros luke Johnston and captain Matty Gibson controlling play , the enforcer Jonny Jackson is next to go into the refs book a harsh booking by all accounts .

Big defender Alex Hamilton cuts the ball out and strides forward at pace but gets his ankles clipped and as he is falling pushes the Appex forward which results in a booking for the beast from the east very harsh to say the least .

The ref blows up to bring the half to an end halftime score Comber Rec. 1 - Appex 0 .

The 2nd half gets underway and again the rec players are keen to carry on where they left off in the 1st half , the Appex forwards are putting the recs back four under pressure but with better communication between the players and with defenders Brandon Cromie and pat Mack having a good game the rec players are coping with everything thrown at them. 15 mins into the 2nd half and disaster strikes following a confrontation on the far side of the pitch where an Appex midfielder throws a punch at Owen John gill who pushes the player away the referee produces a red card which see’s Owen get his marching orders another poor decision by the ref who lets the Appex player off without a card .

Play continues with capt Matty sore toes Gibson moving into the right back position and Ben no nonsense chambers coming on for the tiring pat Mack who had a great game in defence , Appex break through and a stunning double save from big Tom Lappin keeps the rec in front .

25 minutes in and Midfield maestro luke Johnston plays a pass forward to the bike king Cameron Haslam who runs at the Appex defence only to be chopped down ,chance for the rec up steps the beast from the east ,Hamilton who sets the ball up for one of his special free kicks he hammers the ball forward and gives the keeper no chance 2-0 to the Rec and very much deserved.

Play continues with Jonny the enforcer Jackson breaking up play and winning the ball back for the rec , Jackson plays the ball forward to Callum McKay who skips pasted the Appex defender but is unable to keep his shot on target .

Sadayu jack comes back onto the pitch to replace Adam bestie Martin who has run his socks off another good game by the speedy winger . Cameron breaks through to fire a shot in which the keeper makes a great save should really have been 3-0 extra training for Cameron instead of kebabs should do the trick next time .

Callum McKay fires in from the resulting corner but again is unable to hit the target.

The ref brings the game to an end and you can see the joy on the players faces as they celebrate there 1st win against the current league champions a very much deserved win and all round great team / squad performance .
