KO Cup

Comber Rec
3

Bangor Amatuers

2

We had hoped that the Comber Rec pitch would have been available for this Cup fixture against Bangor Amatuers U18's and I'm assurred we would've had that terrific facility but the over-night heavy rain conspired against us to make the 'big' pitch just on the soggy side, however the council pitch had held up really well and so Comber Rec U18's lined up against the pride of Bangor for the 10 o'clock kick-off complete with a full deck of officials, yes really - refs assistants and all !. Comber started the better of the two teams taking advantage of Bangor's lack of game time recently and played some quality football 18 -18 with loads of possession and good pressure. Bangor always dangerous were given very few chances to build or to create and after some precise passing Ross Whitehead reached a 50-50 ball before the Bangor keeper and their centre half on the edge of the box to slot home Comber's opener after about 10 mins. Jonny Hunter and Dylan Wilson combined effectively up front causing Bangor a few problems and chances were being created by Danny Mackey on the left side of midfield, indeed Comber's second goal came from a weaving run from Mackey who rifled the ball low and hard to deflect off a Bangor defender into the net, 2-0 and it could have been more but for a couple of good stops from Bangor's athletic keeper.

Half-time and 2-0 up Comber Rec U18's knew that the game was far from over and knew that to underestimate the Bangor boys would be a huge mistake, so Capt Mike Busby made sure those around him like Robbo, Andy Topping, Andy Bell, Matthew Crooks, Stevie McC and Mark Coulter were all up for the second half onslaugh from Bangor Amatuers who had a lot of the possession early on after the restart, that possession paid dividends for Bangor when they scored midway through the second half. Comber rallied again and the fresh legs of Jamie Morrow changed the dynamics of the game. Dylan Wilson scored a third for Comber after a short corner was whipped into the six yard area, 3-1 but no-one from Comber Rec on or off the pitch believed Bangor would settle for that, and so it proved to be the case as Bangor scored their second to bring the game to an exciting finish with Comber U18's standing firm, defending confidently and keeping the ball until the final whistle.
