WKD Intermediate Cup
28 November 2009
Comber Rec 1 v Limavady Utd 4

LIMAVADY United overcame a spirited Comber Rec to book their place in the next round of the WKD Intermediate Cup. The men from Co Down did however cause the Roesiders a few problems in a twenty minute spell either side of half-time. United did create a host of chances and in the end could have won by a much bigger margin than three goals. Trevor Hutchinson set the visitors on their way only for Ryan Johnston to level for the hosts. Gareth McConaghie restored Limavady's lead before goals from substitutes Paul Owens and Shane Jennings put the gloss on the victory.
The opening goal came in the 14th minute when Hutchinson met Lee Patrick's cross to head the ball home.  Davy Patton should have done better in the 28th minute but he headed wide when well placed in the box from Ciaran Clarke's cross. The big striker was again guilty of not hitting the target three minutes later this time heading wide from Chris Rodden's centre.
Rec struck back in the 34th minute. Kyle McQuillan delivered an inch perfect cross and Johnston got the vital touch to score.
The Roesiders almost restored their lead immediately. Stephen Lowry crossed for Gareth McConaghie but his effort was pushed round the post. From the resultant corner Vincent Sweeney saw his header cleared off the line by Brent Reid.

In the 53rd minute United thought they had regained the lead. However Patton's effort was bizarrely ruled out for offside. Three minutes later the hosts had a big penalty claim when Ryan Oliver appeared to be bundled over in the box but referee Cecil Floyd waved away their vociferous appeals. Midway through the second period the visitors should have retaken the lead. Hutchinson put Stephen Lowry in on goal but the midfielder fired straight at the 'keeper. The Roesiders did regain the lead in the 75th minute. After a major scramble in the box when Hutchinson and Jennings both had efforts blocked, McConaghie forced the ball home. Only three minutes later United extended their lead when Owens cleverly chipped the onrushing Gavin McKenna after Jennings had split the home defence with a clever pass.  In the 80th minute Hutchinson thought he had grabbed his second of the game but his wonderful curling effort was headed off the line. Comber did have a chance two minutes later but the tricky Oliver fired his effort wide  of Michael Doherty's goal. Hutchinson was the provider in the 84th minute when he crossed for Jennings but the teenager's header was easily saved. Jennings did get on the score-sheet in stoppage time however when United broke quickly through Owens and he teed up the striker to score.
