Holywood FC v Comber Rec
League
19.12.09
Holywood FC 2-0 Comber Rec
Comber’s performance against Holywood matched the gloomy conditions of the day as they again failed to impress in the league programme.
Global warming was not on everyone’s lips on Saturday on a windswept, freezing shore of Belfast Lough and the football produced did little to warm the loyal crowd of travelling supporters.
Comber could again use the excuse of being without key players, but as the season progresses and the teams above them pick up points (some of which can only be described as surprising), the followers of Comber Rec would surely love to see football played worthy of the club’s past and reflecting the efforts of their management.
The first half had little to offer from both teams. Both created a number of opportunities and both managed to squander each one until virtually the last kick of the half when the hosts opened the scoring by managing to squeeze the ball past the outstretched arms of Jason Mooney in the Comber goal.
The darkening conditions that heralded the second half began to mirror the faces of the visiting supporters who now had driving sleet to contend with on the wings of the exposed pitch.
Manager O’Rourke made changes at half time which initially gave impetuous to his team but soon possession was being gifted to the opposition and the rare chances being created were thrown away. Too many balls were played into the air instead of feet and there was not enough cohesion between the players.
Any chance of a Comber revival was sniffed out with only 5 minutes to go when the hosts double their lead.
Comber has the ideal opportunity to rectify this performance early in the New Year when they entertain Holywood at Park Way. First though, they have to travel to near neighbours Saintfield in the Clarence Cup and then host Killyleagh in the league. Hopefully the manager shall have everyone available to him for these fixtures as all players must realise the position their club is in and it’s only they who can remedy this.
The man of the match, sponsored by Derek Lowry, was awarded to Joe Jeffries for the second week in succession. Joe should be relishing the Clarence Cup match against his old club and should he produce another performance similar to his last two, his former colleagues should have difficulty in passing him.
With Christmas almost upon us, it’s not difficult to imagine what Jim O’Rourke has on his wish list for the second half of the season. Hopefully the squad shall react to the continued support from the large loyal band of supporters who showed on Saturday, that they would rather stand on the sides of a ‘Baltic’ sports ground than trolley bash around the warmth and relative comfort of Ards Shopping Centre!
