Comber Rec

The u18/ u19 team made there way to holywood for this early morning kick off against holywood f.c . Conditions for the match where dry with a strong wind which would prove to be troublesome later . The squad was short in numbers due to work commitments and injuries with only one sub available for team selection ,however coming into the team was another debutant Dairmund who had signed earlier in the week . First choice keeper big Tom lappin makes his return having missed the first few matches of the season through injury ,although not fully recovered he put himself forward for selection for the benefit of the team .

Manager Phil Johnston had rallied the players following a good weeks training and the players where certainly up for it , thoughts where given for teammate Benjamin Hamilton who had been badly injured with a broken leg during lasts weeks game against sirocco.

What better way to aid his recovery than qwith a victory, well the players where certainly going to try there best . The referee got the game underway and straight from the start the comber players got the ball down and where playing some good football ,2 mins in and throw in from Owen John gill falls to captain Alex Hamilton inside the holywood 18 yard box he fires a shot in and the keeper makes a great save . Play flows from end to end ,15 minutes in and a counter attack sees the holywood no 9 burst into the recs box but there’s the rock Brandon the dancer cromie who makes a superb tackle to stop the possible opening goal by putting the ball out for a corner .

From the resulting corner keeper big Tom plucks the ball out of the air nothing better when your under pressure than seeing your keeper come and collect the ball to take the pressure of the defence , a commanding performance from the big no 1 . Play continues with the comber players showing some good play, there seems a greater determination amongst the players and they where certainly having the better of the game .

27 minutes in and it’s a goal to the rec having been using both channels well throughput the game captain Alex Hamilton wins a header through to the hitman Jonny Jackson who beats 2 players before playing them ball through the holywood left back and centre half for wide man Adam bestie Martin To run onto and puts the ball wide of the keeper and into the net 1-0 to the rec .

The rec attack again Adam Martin wins a free kick , farmer brown Owen John gill fires the ball into midfield maestro Luke “the quiet man “Johnston playing in more forward role as a target man and with instant control chests the ball down to Adam Martin who gets a shot on target which is turned away for a corner . At the back for rec the defence is having a solid game with good performances from Mathew McMaster ,Shaye breen and the rock Brandon” the dancer” cromie.

The referee brings the 1st half to an end a great 1st half performance by all the rec players and a much deserved lead halftime score .

HOLYWOOD. 0 v COMBER REC 1 goal scorer 27 mins Adam Martin .

The 2nd half begins and straight from the start the rec players are controlling the game with the holywood players trying there best to rattle some of the rec players ,they where intent on putting pressure on centre back Owen John gill hoping to provoke a re action from the talented player ,and on 22 minutes into the 2nd half they get there way Owen makes a reckless challenge on the holywood no 10 which sees the ref point to the spot for a penalty no arguments from the rec defender you could see it coming due to constant provocation , the holywood no 8 steps up and puts the ball wide of keeper big Tom who is unfortunate not to get a hand to the ball 1-1 much against the run of play .

The rec players continue to attack ,midfielder Jonny Jackson wins the ball plays it through to Luke Johnston who holds the ball up and plays the ball to Adam Martin who fires a shot in which narrowly misses the the goal. Some great play from the rec forwards with support coming from midfield again some good hold up play from Luke Johnston who again gets the ball through to Adam Martin who hits one with the outside of his foot which the holywood keeper tips over the bar .

The wind is having a part to play throughout the game and on 33 minutes a corner to holywood spells disaster for the rec , the ball is floated over into the recs penalty area and wind carries it straight into the top corner of the net a cruel way to concede a goal and very much against the run of play . Holywood 2 v comber rec 1 .

Play continues with the rec trying there best to get an equaliser but as time begins to run out so do our opportunities , the referee looks at his watch and blows up to bring the game to an end with a final score line of HOLYWOOD F.C. 2. V COMBER REC 1 Goal scorer . 27 mins Adam Martin

What a way to lose a game of football the best team on the wrong end of the result.

MAN OF THE MATCH . THIS WAS A GREAT TEAM PERFORMANCE WITH PLENTY OF CONTENDERS FOR THE AWARD BUT ON THIS OCCASION THE MAN OF THE MATCH GOES TO BRANDON “ the dancer “ CROMIE a rock at the centre of the REC’s defence .

Thanks to coach David Browne on standing in today with his help and support

Thanks to the supporters mums and dads who gave the players so much encouragement.

Man of the Match Brandon Cromie

Goal Scorer: Adam Martin (1)
