Comber Rec

Carryduff

The comber players at last had a home match in comber at the parkway pitch ,the squad was decimated through injury and other commitments with no substitutes available . So selection was not difficult for the coaches if you had boots then you played however only time would tell how difficult this game might prove for the players . Conditions for the game where fair with the pitch soft in places but everything was all set for a good mornings football .

The rec win the toss and get the game underway right from the start the rec players put the carryduff defence under pressure ,the quiet man Luke Johnston once again playing in a forward role was holding the ball up well and laying some great balls off to midfielders Hamilton and Jackson . Luke Johnston was having great joy feeding his strike partner Mathew Adair who came close to open the scoring on more than one occasion .

Meanwhile at the back Brandon the dancer cromie and Shaun smith where having a busy time keeping the carryduff forward line out , a slip from left back Mathew McMaster allows the carryduff no 17 to get in on goal however stand in keeper farmer joe , Owen John gill makes a great save with his feet with what looked like a certain goal. Keeper gill was having good success with his long kicks up field where forward Luke Johnston was controlling the ball and putting forward Mathew Adair through time after time . Another wasted chance striker Mathew Adair fires one in only to see his shot fly past the post .

Some lovely football was on display here this morning at parkway with good performances all round surely it was only a matter of time before the opening goal came both sides pressed with the rec having the better share of the ball ,disaster strikes much against the run of play ,31 minutes on the clock and a break away from the carryduff players seeís a mixup in the recs defence poor communication allows the carryduff midfielder to cut through the centre of the defence and put the ball in the back of the net to make it 1-0 very unfair on the rec players.

The referee brings the half to an end with a score line of comber rec 0 v carryduff 1 a great 1st half performance from the comber players and very unlucky for them to be behind . With no substitutes available for the rec it was impossible to see what changes the coaching team could make ,all those on the pitch had given 100% effort for the team in that 1st half more of the same was required for the rec to get back into the game .

The rec get the 2nd half underway and straight from the start the rec press, midfield general jonny the hitman Jackson again stamping his authority on the game Jonny plays the ball through to Luke Johnston who feeds speedy winger Adam bestie Martin who fires a shot in which goes narrowly past the post . End to end stuff with some meaty challenges going in from both sides keeper Owen gill again prevents a goal with a save from a corner kick .

The game still flowing from end to end and another corner to carryduff which once again Is defended well by the recs defence ,Brandon the dancer cromie blocking the shot . 62 mins on the clock and keeper gill throws the ball to fullback Mathew McMaster the carryduff no7 cuts across keeper gills path and throws a punch which connects with the side of the keepers head keeper Owen is held back by his captain Alex Hamilton from retaliating and getting himself into trouble with the ref ,players from both sides get involved with some hand bags it was going be interesting to see how the ref deals with this .

Assistant coach Hugh Hamilton comes onto the pitch to try and calm the rec players down the ref produces 2 yellow cards one for keeper gill and one for the carryduff player who threw the punch ,as if thatís not bad enough the ref produces a red card and sends the rec keeper off . The ref states that the 1st yellow was for keeper gills reaction and the 2nd was for foul and abusive language aimed at the referee . A very harsh decision considering that the player who punched keeper gill remained on the pitch very inconsistent refereeing.

Forward Luke Johnston steps into nets to replace keeper gill with capt Alex Hamilton dropping back to his more familiar centre back role with centre half Shaun Adair going forward into midfield ,play continues and a great save from Luke Johnston tipping the long range effort over the bar keeps the score at 1-0 , midfield player Dairmund feeds the ball out to Mathew Adair who cuts in and gets a shot away which the carryduff keeper saves to deny the rec a goal .

Carryduff attack with the rec players tiring and struggling to get back the ball is played through to the no9 but this time keeper Luke Johnston blocks the shot however he picks up a foot injury as his reward . Thankfully the keeper is ok to carry on ,68 mins on the clock the rec attack lovely passing ,the ball is played through to Mathew Adair who switches the ball to Adam bestie Martin who hammers the ball into the net a much deserved goal by the rec 1-1 and all set up for a great finish .

The rec players have put a lot of effort into the game with some tired legs on the pitch and with only 10 players ,really do deserve something out of this game ,10 minutes to go and another breakaway by carryduff results in a goal ,try as they did the defence are unable to clear the ball which ends up in the back of the net to make the score comber rec 1 v carryduff 2.

The referee gets the game underway again with the rec players pushing as best they can to try and get the equaliser and as the clock nears the final minute it looks like the recs players are not going to pull this one back the referee blows up to bring the game to an end with a final score of COMBER REC 1. CARRYDUFF 2 .

A hard defeat for the REC and very much against the run of play the game changed on a bad decision by the referee .

MAN OF THE MATCH . There was 11 contenders for The man of the match award and all would be worthy winners but this week the award goes to the quiet man Luke Johnston this versatile player who can adapt to most positions on the pitch from midfielder to forward to goalkeeper an all rounder who had some great moments in todayís game . Congratulations Luke.

Man of the Match Luke Johnston

Goal Scorer: Adam Martin (1)
